Introducing the Berwyn Public Art Initiative

We are launching a new initiative to use public art to transform Berwyn’s Depot District into a dynamic center of creativity and a destination neighborhood. Our primary focus is to install murals to bring to life the blank walls that line Stanley and Windsor streets.

We plan to host events to celebrate the installations, using marketing and press coverage to promote the draw people to the Berwyn Depot District.

Cost Considerations for Mural Installation

Paints for outdoor murals cost around 90 cents a square foot. A 60’ x 60’ foot mural costs roughly $3,000 in paint; a 40’ x 40’ costs roughly $1,500; a 20’ x 20’ roughly $350.
Power washing and priming a wall adds years to the life of a mural. Power washing a wall cost roughly $500. Providing a fresh coat of primer can cost $500.
Because artists generally spend many hours conceiving and installing murals that add value to a community, artists receive a commission for their work. How large a commission generally depends on their level of experience, name recognition, and installation time. An installation on a world-famous building by a leading international artist can garner commissions in the six figures. Working with the artist to identify the appropriate fee is critical.
There’s almost always the right lift for the job. For some walls, a scissor lift can get to any surface. Other walls require an articulated lift to maneuver around corners or structures. A 135-foot lift can run to $10,000 a week, while a 20-foot scissor lift can be less than $500. A lift for a 60’ x 60’ wall can cost $2,500 in a week.
COIs are required for most installations to indemnify the wall owner, artist, and city for any liabilities in case of accidents. A COI generally costs $500 – $800 depending on the location and size of the wall.

Even more than Murals

Additional efforts will focus on installing sculptural objects on the BNSF train platforms, creating pop-up galleries in empty storefronts, and developing artist live/work spaces to attract young creative professionals into the neighborhood.
We want to encourage foot traffic and make it easier for businesses to attract customers. Adding vibrancy through public art will encourage visitors to discover the neighborhood.
