Letter A in Black Lives Matter
by Rae Wilson
The design found in the letter A speaks to a reimagining of brown people as lovely flowers and a garden to be cared for, nurtured, and appreciated. There is always room to grow. In the composition, I have included big yellow flowers to represent brown folx. If you look closely, the center of each flower has a smile; these flowers are simplistic and vibrant against a bright blue sky.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
“My personal works are the living embodiment of the many ideas crowding my head. I like to experiment with color, texture, and mixing contrasting imagery. I love faces. I love faces so much, and so I paint portraits. I work in acrylic paint because the quick-drying qualities force me to let go of second-guessing and to embrace my brushstrokes. In recent times, I’ve been experimenting with the idea of leaving things ‘unfinished.’ I am greatly inspired by the work of Kehinde Wiley. The idea of combining two contrasting styles in a way that creates unity and harmony has greatly influenced my own style of painting.” R. Wilson
