Letter E in Black Lives Matter
by Milton Coronado
Influenced by the painting, Creation of Adam which is on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome by artist Michelangelo, I decided to represent that same meaning in a very modern context. I want to reveal that the creation of Adam represents mankind, it is an unspecified sex, and it represents ALL men and women, including those with a darker skin pigmentation.
I also want those who will view this letter “E” through a religious window, to play with the thought that no one knows the exact skin color of the Adam described in religious books. Therefore, there is no one ideal or perfect template for mankind. We are all created unique, special, gifted, and equal.
The art, designed within the shape of this letter, crops a lot of the famous painting leaving enough room for the viewer to know it is one finger touching another. This represents what we are all familiar — the creation of mankind.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
“I believe we were all called for a special purpose in life. My calling to be an artist and speaker began with my recognition of such balanced beauty in an artist’s perfect work of art—the creation. For me, art and service begin there, and I choose to manifest it in the urban culture. That’s where I have been called to be a beacon of influence.
My influences are the great concrete jungle—the inner city and all its diversity. I find inspiration in its stories and hold them close for reflection. I employ these stories of social justice, struggle, and spirituality to express the deeper sensual pleasure and ephemeral quality of this world. Within this realm, my work varies from realism to abstract, and I am continuously moving along the continuum between the two. I express this work using mediums of aerosol, and acrylic paint.
My goal is to understand the profound problem that may be conflicting within our soul and plant a seed of personal reflection and hope into those same souls and the souls of outsiders. Finally, I want to educate about the problems that hinders us from expanding our hearts and minds and becoming a stronger, and more unified society.” M. Coronado
