Tell us your Story

The cicadas emerging this year last visited us 17 years ago. What kind of change have you seen in your city, yourself, or someone you know over the last 17 years?

Reflecting on the past 17 years, akin to the cicadas emerging after a long slumber, it's evident that both I and my surroundings have undergone profound transformations. When the cicadas last visited, I was a budding Sociology and Peace and Justice student at a small liberal arts college in Indianapolis. Moving from the bustling suburbs of Chicago to Indy was more than a change of scenery—it was where I began to discover who I was and envisioned my role in reshaping the world.

In those college years, my journey was not just academic; it was deeply personal and explorative. I unearthed my creative flair, sharpened my intellect, and nurtured an insatiable curiosity. From there, my path led me to graduate school, followed by stints across the country—from the mountains of Colorado to the rural side of North Carolina, and finally circling back to the familiar grounds of Chicago in 2019.

Life, in its ceaseless flow, presented its trials. The grief of losing my brother and father has been a profound challenge, reshaping my world and bringing a depth to my empathy and resilience I hadn’t known before. On the flip side of life’s coin, joyous chapters unfolded too—I met and married my best friend and partner, a rock in my swirling sea of change. Together, we've crafted a life filled with love, laughter, and the shared dream of making a difference.

Professionally, I've found my calling at the University of Chicago, where I wear the hat of a Retention Specialist. Here, I channel my energies to ensure that students not only pursue their academic goals but reach them, armed with the belief that education is a pivotal force for change.

On the lighter side of life, I've tapped into my entrepreneurial spirit by starting a business that marries my love for art and design with the playful world of children's clothing. This creative outlet not only fulfills me but also connects me with like-minded souls, many of whom have become incredible friends.

Life's celebrations have seen me playing the role of officiant at the weddings of dear friends—an honor that’s both delightful and a testament to the bonds I’ve nurtured over the years. And yes, the cherry on top—I bought a house, transforming it into a home filled with memories and dreams. My family circle has also expanded to include the delightful chaos of nieces and nephews, each bringing a new burst of joy and wonder into my life.

Like the cicadas, I too have emerged repeatedly over these 17 years, each time different, shaped by experiences and boundless in my evolution. Just as these creatures leave their old skins behind, I’ve shed many versions of myself along the way, each layer a stepping stone to who I am today. In this symphony of life, I've learned that change, much like the cicadas’ song, is both inevitable and beautiful.
