Affen Segun

BPAI is thrilled to present the artwork of Affen Segun, among the sixteen artists featured in the Community Art Collection housed at the Baird & Warner Berwyn office. We have included two works by Segun, “Say it Out Loud” and “Eternal Joy,” both are limited edition prints on paper with an edition number of 10.

His artwork exudes joy, pride, and playfulness, with a rich nod to the Nigerian culture through gorgeous patterns in their attire and thoughtful representation of his community. When looking into his subject's eyes, it’s effortless to pick up on their emotions; some are bursting with joy and love that feels contagious, while others have more serious expressions with stories waiting to be shared with the viewer. He draws inspiration from artists Benny Bing, Yinka Shonibare, and Kehinde Wiley as he shapes and flourishes in his own aesthetic.

My paintings are a reflection of the African culture, tradition, events, and its people. I’m motivated by the Black culture. I see culture as a source of inspiration for my art. As a contemporary artist whose passion for creating portraits of children, women, and men of Africa, my work is brought alive through the use of a combination of acrylic hues and African patterned fabrics. My paintings allow me to connect more intimately with my viewers.

Segun’s work is represented by Janet Rady Fine Art, who included his work in a recent group show at the London Art Fair 2023. He is represented in Chicago by Golden Our Collective, a new arts agency dedicated to elevating black creatives at scale. In addition, Segun is preparing for his debut solo show at the Elephant Room Gallery fall of 2023.

Affen Segun (b.1993 Lagos, Nigeria) is a self-taught artist who began drawing at age ten after being inspired by the popular Nigerian comic “Super Strikers.” Eager to develop his skills, Segun watched YouTube videos and practiced painting portraits of Nigerian celebrities such as Wizkid, Davido, Mayorkun, and Don Jazzy. He posted them on Instagram and quickly made a name for himself.

Since 2018, Segun has developed a distinctive style inspired by the colorful Ankara fabric worn by his Yoruba mother for occasions and celebrations. Segun attributes his creativity to his mother and paid homage to her with his first solo exhibition in Lagos titled Omo Adérónké (son of Adérónké).

Segun lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria.
